CM launches awareness drive against witchcraft in Jharkhand

With an aim to create awareness among the people against witchcraft,the state government today launched a drive against it.

To do so,Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das flagged off a vehicle carrying sound system in Ranchi today.”This awareness drive will try to end the menace of witchcraft”,said Das.

The move comes after the Jharkhand High Court took suo motu cognizance of the case after five women were lynched by the people in a village in Ranchi on August 8.This crime had underlined a disturbing trend in Jharkhand showing the alleged practice of “witchcraft” by Adivasis.

Records show that as many as 49 people, most of them women, were killed for being “witches” in the state last year. This year, 12 people had been killed until March, the latest available figures with the police show.
