supremecourtIn a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court today quashed the constitutional amendment of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) that seeks to replace the 22-year-old collegium system for appointment of judges and said that the new system was unconstitutional.

The landmark judgement, given by a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, was widely hailed today by jurists, who said it would prevent government’s intervention in the judiciary.

Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan welcomed the verdict and said government was trying to deter the judiciary by bringing such laws.
