"Migration and Movement".This was the theme adopted by a section of Adivasi(tribal) groups to mark the annual event- International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

To celebrate the annual event across the state, top tribal leaders such as three former Chief Ministers- Arjun Munda, Hemant Soren and Babulal Marandi-have put up billboards and advertisement in local dailies.

At Khunti, Adivasi Sabha members staged dance and music show. Their counterparts in Ranchi and Simdega held workshops.   

"We are using the occasion to height light the common problem faced by the tribals. The problem is 'Migration and Movement'.To overcome it is their agitations in different forms-rallies, dharna and so on", says Soren.   

As it is, August 9 is commemorated as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in recognition of the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982.

Each year this day is celebrated around the world. A commemorative event is also organized at the United Nations Headquarters in New York by the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch – Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, which brings together indigenous peoples’ organizations, UN agencies, Member States, civil society, academia and the general public.

The observance of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples took place today ECOSOC Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This year’s theme is “Indigenous peoples’ Migration and Movement”.
